Editing Services San Francisco

Luma Creative provides professional editing services for San Francisco video productions. Our goal is to take the footage from good to great. The video really does come together in the edit! And while it took us a while to realize this, it became apparent once we brought on some incredibly talented editors. They are able to link clips in a way that is unparalleled. Video editing is crucially important to have quality video production.

Our Video Editing Process

Step 1 – Assembly

What do video editors do? It’s sometimes thought that editors just put clips together. But it’s so much more than that. Editors carefully digest the footage and organize it in ways that make the assembly more efficient. From tagging and grouping clips to readjusting speeds and interpreting the footage. It’s all a part of the process. Once the footage has been organized it’s at that stage where they put together an assembly cut.

For corporate shoots with a lot of dialogue, we call this our A cut. Essentially all of the useable sound bytes sequenced together in a way that makes sense for us. At this point, we send the client our assembly for them to review and ensure that we are telling the story the way they want it to be shown.

Step 2 – Polishing

After all, a solid sound foundation is a key to a great film. For commercial, since it is completely shot-listed, we know the order of the clips precisely. It’s more just a matter of sequencing them in an order that makes sense and very much fine-tuning the actual edit.

Once the assembly editing cut has been approved. We then move on to the first version of the rough cut. At this point, for corporate, we make needed adjustments to the A cut and then carefully sequence our B roll ontop, in a sort of layered approach to make the story really come to life. We spend hours, fine-tuning these cuts to be sure that they are the best that they can be!

Step 3 – The Final Product

For commercial films, we take that assembly cut and put the finishing touches on the editing, before it moves on to sound design and color.

Luma Creative knows how to turn a good edit into a great one. We provide our editing services in San Francisco to all of our clients as well as other clients who need editing services! Let’s see what we can do for you!

What is post-production?

Post-production is everything that happens to footage after the shoot wraps: assembling the edit, colour work, sound mixing, music, graphics and titles, then exporting the versions each platform needs. It is usually the longest phase of a project and the one clients underestimate. A one-day corporate shoot routinely carries two to three weeks of post behind it, because the shoot produces raw material and post is where it becomes a film.

What is color grading?

Color grading is the stage after the edit is locked where the color, contrast and brightness of every shot are adjusted so the footage looks consistent and carries the mood the film is going for. It is not the same as color correction, which happens first and fixes problems: white balance, exposure differences between cameras, footage shot under mixed office lighting. Grading is the creative pass that follows. On a two-camera interview it is what makes the cuts invisible. On a product film it is what makes the product the right color on every screen it plays on.
