Sound Design Services: San Francisco

Our sound design services in San Francisco will add depth and layers to your video production. Often times it’s thought to put all the time and energy into the visuals, but it turns out that the audio side of things is just as important. Bad audio can quickly alienate your viewers, regardless of how quality the visuals are. Is the dialogue crackly and distorted? Is the foley overpowering the dialogue? We use a layered approach to ensure that the whole mix comes through well!

Step 1: Dialogue polishing

After the picture has been locked, the first thing we do is go through and set the levels of the dialogue. It could either be voice over or on set dialogue or also Usually, we aim for around -6db. After this, we use to add a compressor and some EQ to make the sound consistent and full. Sometimes we may also add or remove echo or other ambient noise.

Step 2: Foley

At this stage, we add in foley. We may be working from on set sound or recording our own, or going to online libraries, whatever the case, we’ll want the scenes to sound as natural as possible while also coming to life. If someone is chasing another person, we want to hear the wind. If someone is walking in a creek, we want to hear the water rush by them. It’s really a creative process that makes the film really come to life!

Step 3: Mixing & Mastering

We then go through and make sure the levels of the foley complement the dialogue. Layers are really the key here! As the dialogue fades, bringing back in the music subtly and then accenting it with foley sounds.
